Tyler Kempney

Tyler Kempney

Tyler Kempney is a world class athlete with ice tools in his hands; whether he is climbing ice, mixed, or in competitions.

With that being said, he is much more than that, he is dedicated to his family, his friends, and his community. Despite his love for the sport, he is more focused on using his platform to uplift those around him. He sees his mission in life is to help others discover what's inside of them, so they can become their best and truest versions of themselves.

Since 2018, he began pursuing ice climbing as a sport and kicked off the season off by putting up a first ascent called Conditional Love (WI5+ M5 R) on the most iconic alpine wall in CO, the East Face on Longs Peak, and was featured on RedBull TV for the ascent. Riding that momentum, he quickly ticked off the 3 most difficult dry tooling and mixed climbs in the USA (at the time), all within 3 consecutive weekends (Saphira, Super Wobbler, and Jedi Mind Tricks), and completed them with a total of 9 attempts for all. This sparked his interest to compete and since then, he has been consistently placing as one of the top Americans in both international and domestic competitions, becoming the first American to win gold at the International Cup level (2 European Cups, back to back), and became the first American to finish top 5 at a World Championship.

All while pursuing his own dreams, Tyler (with help from the rest of the community) opened up The Ice Coop in Boulder, CO which happened to be the first dedicated facility for dry tooling in the USA. Through his personality, dedication, and community cultivation, he helped train some of the best athletes in the USA. This infectious energy sparked other members of the community throughout the USA to open up their own training centers or build home walls to train more intentionally. Since then, the USA has become stronger as a team with multiple athletes earning medals in prestigious events such as Youth World Championships, World Cups, World Championships, and International Cups. And the best part is, these athletes are the product of multiple coaches from different parts of the country.

After running the beloved gym for 3 years, he entrusted it to his CO family and moved back to NY in 2023. There he is beginning to establish a new community and continues to pursue his personal goals.
