Men’s waterproof jacket FAQs.

How do you wash a waterproof jacket?

Use a front-loading washing machine on a gentle cycle with a detergent specifically designed for waterproof clothing. Avoid regular detergents and fabric softeners as they can damage the jacket’s water-repellent coating. After washing, reapply a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment to maintain its performance. For step-by-step instructions, visit our how to wash a waterproof jacket guide.

Are down jackets waterproof?

Most down jackets are not fully waterproof and they lose their insulating properties when wet. While many have water-resistant shells to protect against light rain, prolonged exposure to moisture can compromise their insulation. For wet conditions, consider a waterproof jacket layered over your down jacket or explore insulated jackets with synthetic insulation that performs better when wet.

How can you tell if a jacket is waterproof?

A waterproof jacket will have features such as fully taped seams, waterproof zippers, and a durable water repellent (DWR) coating on the fabric’s surface. Look for technical ratings, such as a hydrostatic head measurement of at least 10,000mm, which indicates the fabric’s ability to withstand water pressure. Waterproof jackets are often labeled with terms like GORE-TEX or PertexĀ® Shield, which denote advanced waterproof technologies. If you're unsure, check the product specifications or consult our waterproof jacket guide for more information.
