Waterproof Down

Waterproof Down

Waterproof down jackets for cold, wet conditions.

Winter weather often brings rain, sleet, snow, freezing temperatures, and low-visibility conditions such as fog. Staying comfortable outdoors requires protection from both the cold and the wet. Waterproof down jackets provide dependable insulation and weather protection throughout autumn and winter.

We use our expertise in technical shells and insulated outerwear to create jackets that perform in changing weather conditions. Waterproof down jackets combine down insulation with waterproof outer fabrics for warmth and protection in cold, wet conditions. This makes them a practical option for winter walking, hiking, travel, and everyday outdoor use.

Warmth and waterproof protection in one jacket.

Traditional down insulation provides outstanding warmth, but extended exposure to wet weather can reduce its effectiveness.

That’s why we use 2-layer PertexĀ® Shield outer fabric in our waterproof down jackets, helping to shield you from rain, snow, and cold winds while remaining breathable enough for active days outdoors. The DWR treatment helps water bead and roll off the fabric.

We treat the down insulation with a Grangers Down DefendĀ® hydrophobic finish to help it perform in damp conditions. This treatment helps the down maintain its loft, so it can continue trapping warmth when moisture is present. The result is a rainproof down jacket that continues to provide warmth in damp and wet conditions.

Built for winter adventures.

Combining waterproof protection and down insulation in a single garment, a waterproof down jacket offers warmth without the need for a separate waterproof shell. This can reduce the need for multiple layers during cold-weather activities. It can simplify packing, reduce overall kit weight, and provide a convenient solution for winter walking, commuting, and travel.

Built with durable fabrics and carefully designed constructions, these jackets are ready for repeated use throughout the winter season.

Why down fill power matters.

Fill power measures the loft and insulating performance of down insulation. Higher fill power down expands more efficiently, trapping warm air while keeping weight to a minimum. This helps waterproof down jackets provide warmth without excessive bulk, supporting a wide range of outdoor activities.

Choosing the right waterproof down jacket.

The best waterproof down jacket depends on how and where you use it. Lightweight waterproof down jackets are suitable for everyday wear, demanding hikes, and fast-moving activities. Their low weight and compact design make them easy to carry and suited to active use. Jackets with higher fill power insulation and boxwall constructions provide increased warmth in sub-zero temperatures and bitter winds.

Many waterproof down jackets use high-quality down with either 700 fill power or 800 fill power. Higher fill power down provides excellent warmth while keeping weight to a minimum. Combined with a waterproof outer fabric, this creates a practical solution for wet weather and low temperatures.

An adjustable hood, secure pockets, and a durable outer layer help improve comfort in poor weather.
