How to Reproof Your GORE-TEX Jacket
How to reproof your GORE-TEX jacket.
With regular cleaning and care, your GORE-TEX jacket will see you through many mountain missions.Ā Ā
Itās always been important to frequently wash and reproof our waterproof kit. But as we transition to fluorocarbon-free DWRs in our GORE-TEX jackets, itās more critical than ever. Fluorocarbon-free DWRs need more regular maintenance than you might be used to and you may notice that your GORE-TEX jacket starts to appear wet more quickly. This doesnāt mean itās no longer waterproof, but rather that the breathability is compromised and you might feel a little clammy as a result. You can prevent this by regularly washing and reproofing your GORE-TEX jacket to keep it performing at its best.Ā
Reproofing tips for your GORE-TEX jacket.
When you notice water's stopped beading and rolling off the outer fabric, it's time to revitalise your GORE-TEX jacketās DWR.Ā
If your GORE-TEX jacket is clean but water is not beading on the outer fabric, you can tumble dry it following the guidelines on the care label. This may re-activate the factory-applied DWR coating.Ā Ā
If you donāt have access to a tumble dryer, iron on a medium heat using a clean tea towel (or similar) as a barrier between the iron and jacket.
You can wash and reproof your GORE-TEX jacket at the same time, using a technical wash and proofer. Simply follow our washing instructions.Ā
Hand washing your GORE-TEX jacket? You may find it easier to use a spray-on DWR re-proofer. While the jacket is still damp, spray the outer fabric with the spray-on proofer, following the bottle's instructions.Ā Ā
Whichever way you reproof your GORE-TEX jacket, we advise finishing off by tumble drying on a low heat setting for 20-30 minutes.Ā
