Tom Randal leading Century Crack (5.14b/8c)

The time of year has come where outdoor enthusiasts put away one set of gear and pull out another. It’s similar to a ptarmigan turning white or a squirrel readying its den for hibernation. This time of year is characterised by one main event: The Kendal Mountain Festival.

Here at Rab we are getting pretty excited for the world premiere of the Wide Boyz film at Kendal. Tom Randall, one of our sponsored athletes, has with Pete Whittaker, gone on an odyssey to climb the USA’s hardest off-width cracks. Their successful first free ascent of Century Crack (5.14b/8c) is widely regarded as one of the world’s hardest and most gruelling off-width climbs.

Hotaches productions were onsite to film the Sheffield lads making their first ascent. Paul Diffley and Chris Alstrin have documented vividly the two years of training for the climb in Tom’s basement. Watching how hard the guys trained is truly inspiring, and makes even the hardest of us feel pretty weak.

Alex Ekins travelled with the Wide Boyz to capture some incredibly inspiring images. Take a look at his website here: http://alexekins.co.uk/

The Kendal Mountain festival promises a huge variety of films, speakers, art and awards, all equally inspiring.
