Dates: 4th – 5th July 2020
Location: Plas y Brenin, North Wales
The UK part of the training will begin with an evening get together once the selection process as finished. It will be a chance to meet the other people who will be on the program and chat to Ric about the UK training and the Alpine course. It will be an informal meeting with a few slides to give you a flavour of what the Alpine trip will involve.
The second part of the UK training will run over one and a half days and incorporate 1 full day in the mountains and another half day of planning and preparation. Overnight accommodation will be camping, with tents provided. It will be based from Plas Y Brenin mountain centre in Capel Curig, with a mountain day spent in Snowdonia.
The focus will be on climbing skills, scrambling, personal equipment and camp skills, plus general mountain skills and fitness in preparation for the trip to the Alps. What we do exactly will always be a bit weather dependent, but hopefully, we will be able to spend at least one whole day in the mountains, using ropes and more technical equipment to train on some rocky terrain and having a fun day out.
The course will be run by Ric and the other Guides who will be working with you in the Alps. It’s a chance for parents to come along and meet Ric and the other Guides too if they haven’t done so already.
It will also be an opportunity to try out equipment that you will be using on the Alpine course. Mountaineering equipment such as harnesses, helmets, boots and crampons will be supplied and fitted for you, and you will have a chance to try out the tents that you will be using in the Alps, and ask questions about clothing and equipment. Somebody from Rab will be there to talk to you and supply you with some clothing for the Alpine trip also.
