How to repair and care for your backpack

Repairing a buckle

If you need to repair a buckle, follow these simple steps:

  1. Identify the male and female sections of the damaged buckle, even if only one side is damaged both sections are going to need replacing.
  2. Determine the width of your webbing and select the correct size and type of buckle or threadback.
  3. Remove both sides of the damage buckle from the item. One side can be unthreaded the other will need to be snapped/cut off. Make sure to cut only the plastic buckle and not the webbing.
  4. Thread on the new Quick Attach buckle
  5. Then, when you get home from your trip, consider sending it back to Service Centre for a permanent solution.

Sewing your backpack

If you need to sew your backpack, we’ve got a great video on Field Darning Techniques. However if you have a patch repair kit here is a simple technique that is hard wearing yet temporary that will see you through until you get back:

  1. Start by cleaning the affected area where possible
  2. Apply Rab repair patch of suitable size or another repair patch – a circle is best for this to avoid lifting corners; but of course, any patch is better than none. You should try and avoid patching across seams where possible.
  3. Make sure you apply the patch smoothly – using the back of your nail can help with this.
  4. Then, when you get home from your trip, consider sending back to Service Centre for a permanent solution, which is always here to help you keep your garments going for as long as possible.
