SIMON VERSPEAK

Simon Verspeak of the AMI is a super keen climber, skier and mountaineer who works full-time as a mountain instructor. He runs the small business of OranjeBergsport, providing bespoke skills training for mountain adventuring. He is nominally based in North Wales, but works worldwide on expeditions.

I bought the Vapour-Rise Alpine Jacket because everyone I know has at least one item of Rab Vapour-Rise clothing and claims it is their favourite. I thought I'd better try it out for myself and since owning this jacket, it has fast become one of my favourites too, going from an additional mid-layer in my outdoor wardrobe to something I wear most days out on the hill.

I'm a real fan of flexibility within my layering system as I run quite hot ascending at my own speed and quite cold if stopped. I often used a mid-weight fleece with a windproof outer as a combination, but the Vapour-Rise Alpine Jacket brings the two into one handy piece. I have found that in most situations it can deal with covering both bases, pushing sweat away when working and keeping warmth in when static.

The jacket is both incredibly windproof and impressively showerproof. I demand a lot from clothing and robustness is very important for me when looking for a jacket and having used the Vapour-Rise Alpine in the UK, Alps and the Himalaya, I am yet to scruff it up!

The hood comfortably goes over or under a helmet, providing protection on those in-between days and as someone who appreciates garments that look good as well as being practical, the Vapour-Rise Alpine has a clean finish and fits well.
