The AMI (Association of Mountaineering Instructors) is the representative body for professionally qualified Mountaineering Instructors in the UK and Ireland. It is also a key brand partner for Rab and one that we are always excited to work with.

With the new year finally settled in and winter arriving (rather briefly) to Scotland, the Rab Team recently spent a weekend at Glenmore Lodge in the Scottish Highlands, attending the AMI AGM. The event takes place annually and brings together mountaineering instructors from across the UK and Ireland to network, discuss important issues to their profession and learn new skills.

This year we were delighted to be able to offer our own workshops at the AGM, explaining a number of new clothing technologies to the instructors and giving them the opportunity to test a variety of Rab products, from baselayers to outers. In one particularly memorable session, we focused on overloading the layering system through a variety of high intensity activities; mimicking a hard day on the hill. Then, stopping all activity and letting body temperatures drop, the attendees were able to assess the breathability, wicking and insulating properties of a variety of Rab baselayers.

We also took the opportunity to test multiple mid and outer layers, introducing the new Alpha Direct technology to many individuals for the first time. This new insulation from Polartec is among the most breathable in our range and makes the Alpha Direct Jacket an ideal choice for many of the instructors present who need a jacket that can maintain a comfortable micro-climate across a range of temperatures and levels of activity.

AMI instructors spend the majority of their time outside in all imaginable conditions. They abuse their gear more in one season than most of us do in a lifetime of use. To get their seal of approval is hard, but incredibly rewarding. The brand partnership between Rab and the AMI has delivered invaluable feedback on gear, instruction techniques and insight into a wider outdoor audience. The passion, experience and expertise of some of the instructors has helped us to develop new gear that keeps our designs at the cutting edge and up to their exacting standards.

We look forward to returning to Glenmore Lodge again next year for more workshops, expert advice and a healthy dose of fun in the snow.
