A waterproof jacket typically features fully taped seams, waterproof zippers, and a durable water repellent (DWR) coating. Check for technical fabric ratings like GORE-TEX or Pertex® Shield and a hydrostatic head measurement of at least 10,000mm, which indicates water resistance.
Are down jackets waterproof?
Down jackets are not inherently waterproof. While many have water-resistant shells to protect against light rain, prolonged exposure to moisture can compromise their insulation. For wet conditions, consider layering a waterproof jacket over your down jacket.
